Borrego Solar is a solar energy system designer, developer and installer of commercial and utility-scale projects. The company also operates and maintains solar equipment for more than 200 megawatts (MW) of solar capacity. Borrego Solar's operations and maintenance includes a number of utility-scale projects it has constructed as well as some it has not, including a 2.4 (MW) installation at the Anaheim Convention Center, and a 17 MW installation in Massachusetts.[3]
Borrego Solar is headquartered in San Diego, California with additional offices in Boston, Oakland, and Manhattan.[4][5]
History
Borrego Solar was founded by the astrophysicist James Rickard and his colleagues in 1980 after they designed and installed a solar system for his house in Borrego Springs, California.[4] Through the 1980s and 1990s the company continued to complete small residential jobs and by 2000 it was mostly done operating. In 2001, as a part of a final project for his economics class, Aaron Hall, a family friend, presented Rickard with a business plan to revive the business.[6][7] That same year, shortly after Hall's graduation from Northwestern University, Rickard sold half of the business to Hall.[8]
The company completed large scale installations at Qualcomm's Building W Campus and University of California, San Diego in 2008.[9][10] In February 2009, the company raised $14 million in venture funding for expansion.[11][12] Borrego Solar sold its residential solar installation business to groSolar, a company based in White River Junction, Vermont in 2009 in order to focus its business on commercial buildings, schools and other public sector projects.[8][13]
In 2014, the company reached an agreement with the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority to develop and build a 3.3 MW system on the roof of Terminal 2 at the San Diego International Airport.[14] The Sacramento International Airport reached an agreement with Borrego Solar and NRG Energy to design and operate a large photovoltaic array at the airport in April 2015.[15]
