Christian Timothy Walton (born 9 November 1995) is an English professional footballer who plays as a goalkeeper for League Two club Luton Town, on loan from Championship club Brighton & Hove Albion. He has represented England at under-19 and under-20 levels.

Club career

Plymouth Argyle

Born in Wadebridge, Cornwall,[1] Walton began his career at the age of 10 in the Plymouth Argyle youth system.[3] He was named in a matchday squad for the first time three days after his 16th birthday for an FA Cup first round fixture against Stourbridge, remaining an unused substitute as the match resulted in a 3–3 draw.[2][4]

Brighton & Hove Albion

On 15 February 2013, Walton signed for Championship club Brighton & Hove Albion, where he completed his scholarship, before signing a three-year professional contract in the summer of 2013.[3] During the 2013–14 season, Walton was twice an unused substitute in consecutive matches, a 3–1 home win over Leicester City on 7 December 2013,[5] prior to a 1–0 away win over Middlesbrough one week later.[6] In the build-up to the 2014–15 season, Walton signed a new four-year contract with the club on 8 July 2014.[7] He was an unused substitute on the opening day of the season, a 1–0 home defeat to Sheffield Wednesday.[8] Walton made his professional debut for Brighton aged 18 in a 2–0 away defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the League Cup fourth round on 29 October 2014.[9] Six days later, he made his Football League debut in a 1–0 home win over Wigan Athletic.[10] Walton made his second consecutive starting appearance in a 1–1 draw with Blackburn Rovers on 8 November 2014.[11] He returned to the starting lineup on the final day of the season in a 0–0 draw with Middlesbrough, his first appearance since November.[12] In addition to his four appearances for Brighton, Walton also kept two clean sheets.[13]

Loan spells

Bury

On 21 July 2015, Walton signed for newly promoted League One club Bury on a season-long loan deal.[13] He made his debut for the club in a 1–1 with Doncaster Rovers on the opening day of the 2015–16 season.[14] Walton returned to Brighton on 1 September 2015 due to an underlying groin injury, after making six appearances for Bury.[15]

Plymouth Argyle

On 19 November 2015, Walton joined former club Plymouth Argyle on loan until 3 January 2016 as cover for the injured Luke McCormick.[16] He made his Plymouth debut in a 2–1 home defeat to arch-rivals Exeter City two days later.[17] After a further three starting appearances, Walton returned to Brighton upon the expiration of his loan spell.[18]

Luton Town

On 24 June 2016, Walton signed for League Two club Luton Town on a season-long loan, linking back up with Nathan Jones who was first-team coach for his first three years at Brighton.[19] He made his Luton debut on the opening day of the 2016–17 season in a 3–0 away win over Plymouth Argyle.[20] During a 0–0 away draw with Notts County on 29 October, Walton saved a Vadaine Oliver penalty to keep a clean sheet for Luton, which extended the club's unbeaten league run to seven matches and earned him a place in the English Football League Team of the Week.[21]

International career

Walton's first international call-up was for England under-19s for their friendly against Turkey on 5 March 2014.[22] He came on as a 76th-minute substitute for Mitchell Beeney during the 3–0 win.[23] His first England under-20 call-up came for their first fixture of the 2014–15 season, a friendly against Romania,[24] which Walton featured in to win his first cap.[25] Walton was called up to the England under-21 squad for the first time for their matches against United States under-23 and Norway under-21 on 25 August 2015.[26] However, he was forced to withdraw from the squad six days later after sustaining a groin injury playing for Bury in a 1–1 draw with Oldham Athletic.[27] Walton's next England under-21 call-up came on 3 October 2016 for their matches against Kazakhstan under-21 and Bosnia and Herzegovina under-21.[28] He won his first cap against Bosnia and Herzegovina, keeping a clean sheet in a 5–0 win on 11 October 2016.[29]
