Salty Brine State Beach is a state-operated recreation area on Block Island Sound in the town of Narragansett, Rhode Island.[2] Formerly called Galilee State Beach after the village in which it is located, it was renamed to honor radio and television personality "Salty" Brine (Walter Leslie Brian, 1918-2004) in 1990.[3] The area offers ocean swimming and saltwater fishing. A 2,800-square-foot (260 m2) beach pavilion and boardwalk were added to the facility in 2010.[4]
In the news
On July 11, 2015, the beach came to national attention when an apparent explosion from under the sand threw a woman 5-6 feet into the air, injuring her. The cause of the blast remains a mystery.[5]
