Whangara is a small community in the northeast of New Zealand's North Island.
Located between Gisborne and Tolaga Bay, five kilometres southwest of Gable End Foreland and 2 km east of State Highway 35, it features prominently in the early history of the Ngāti Porou iwi.[1]
Whangara was the location and setting for the successful New Zealand novel (by Witi Ihimaera) and film Whale Rider.[2]
The Maori tribe of Whangara has a legend about a man named Paikea, who rode from Hawaiki on the back of a whale to New Zealand. This was apart of the film Whale Rider. The Whale Rider is a very interesting film, and if you are keen to learn about Maoris, you will see a bit of what they are. They are very traditional and outgoing, but willing to change and adapt to the modern world, but keep their traditions.
